The First Thirty
The story behind the creation
A single canvas worked on for twenty-six of the thirty days — begun as a moderate goal, finished as something else entirely.
The goal, as written on day one, was modest: thirty minutes of paint, four evenings a week. It was filed under moderate because it asked for consistency rather than courage.
By the second week the canvas had stopped being an exercise. Layers went down and came off again. The blue kept returning — not chosen so much as insisted upon — until the black underneath started reading as depth rather than absence.
What the challenge produced was not the painting. It was the evidence that a practice abandoned for eleven years could be picked back up on a weeknight, in an ordinary room, with nobody watching.
